35 People Remanded in Custody on Charges of Joining a Terrorist Group Following Social Media Calls to Join the Palestinian Resistance

The State Security Prosecution (SSSP) has renewed the detention of approx. 35 people in connection with case numbers 2806 and 2627 for the year 2024, both of which are being handled by the SSSP. The first case involves around three defendants, while the second case includes around 32 defendants. The prosecution has charged the defendants with joining a terrorist group (ISIS).

This follows actions by a group of young people, aged between 17 and 27, who had formed groups on Telegram app, calling for travel to Gaza to join the Palestinian resistance, believing that this was the only way to support the Palestinian cause amid the severe repression in Egypt. National security forces arrested these individuals and referred them to the prosecution, where their detention has been repeatedly renewed over the past several months.

This comes in the context of the escalating war in Gaza and the restricted public space in Egypt, where dozens of participants in protests condemning the aggression on Gaza have been arrested since October 2023.
