A leader in the Independence Party Ihab Goha After 5 Years of Pretrial Detention During Which He Was Subjected to Medical Neglect Despite Deteriorating Health

Ihab Masoud Ibrahim Goha, a leader of the The Independence Party, passed away on the morning of November 4, 2024, after enduring severe health issues for five years during his detention. Goha had been held in pretrial detention since September 23, 2019, in connection with case No. 1358 of 2019. He was accused of joining an illegal groupm calling for protests, disrupting state facilities, and spreading false news using social media. Goha died after suffering a second stroke in September of the previous year, which caused a further deterioration in his health, rendering him unable to move.

During his detention, Goha also suffered from worsening health due to diabetes, as well as severe burns from an accident in prison when hot water fell on his feet. Additionally, he did not receive adequate treatment for his respiratory condition; he underwent surgery to remove a cyst from his lung, but after the surgery, another cyst appeared, further worsening his condition.

After his death, the family faced significant difficulties in receiving the body from the Alexandria Medical Hospital, where the body was delayed for more than 12 hours. There were also stringent procedures regarding burial and receiving condolences. It is worth noting that Goha was transferred to Borg El Arab Prison from his previous detention at Badr 1 Prison when calls for a strike intensified there in July of this year.

It is also noteworthy that many of the pretrial detainees in the same case were released over the past years. They were arrested in 2019 following the Independence Party’s support for protests called by opposition figure and contractor Mohamed Ali on September 20, 2019.
