EFHR has documented the decision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution to release journalist Rasha Qandil on bail pending Case No. 4196 of 2025 (Supreme State Security- SSSP). She was released in exchange for a financial bail of 50,000 Egyptian pounds after being charged with spreading and broadcasting false news and information both inside and outside the country.
The prosecution also confronted Rasha Qandil with 31 complaints filed against her during the current month of May by citizens from several governorates, accusing her of disseminating false news. According to investigations by the National Security Sector, she committed the crime of spreading false news that could harm the public interest.
The investigation included confronting her with a number of her social media posts that addressed issues related to political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, blogger Mohamed Oxygen, and lawyer Huda Abdel Moneim. She was also questioned about several of her published articles, including one dated April 25, 2025, titled “The History of Borrowing and Loans from Western Countries,” and another titled “The Sovereign Wealth Fund 2: Egypt Between Military Rule and the Police State.”
Rasha Qandil had received a summons from the State Security Prosecution to appear for interrogation today, May 25, 2025. She attended the session accompanied by a number of lawyers. The interrogation lasted eight hours and concluded with a decision to release her on bail pending the case.
