According to lawyers who spoke to EFHR, the Prison Authority informed the Terrorism Criminal Court convened at the Badr Complex on July 19 that it was unable to transfer dozens of defendants from various prisons, including the Badr prisons, 10th of Ramadan Prison, and Abu Zaabal Prison. This led to the postponement of all cases scheduled for that day due to the absence of the defendants. Meanwhile, Badr 3 Prison administration informed the families of detainees—who were scheduled to visit their relatives that same day—that visits were canceled, citing the detainees’ attendance at court sessions as the reason, despite the court announcing that they did not appear.
This coincides with circulating reports of escalating unrest inside Badr 3 Prison, including incidents of detainees setting fire to their cell blankets and repeated suicide attempts. Some reports also indicate that instead of responding to these developments, the Badr Prison administrations escalated the situation by blocking sewage drains in the prison sector, leading to the spread of foul odors and an infestation of insects such as flies and cockroaches. In addition, water supply was cut off to the sector, except for one hour at midday—when water temperatures are at their highest—further increasing the detainees’ suffering.
Despite ongoing reports of strikes and suicide attempts inside the prison over the past weeks, there has been no official response from the relevant authorities. The Public Prosecution has not taken action to investigate these violations, and the National Council for Human Rights has not conducted any on-site visits to Badr 3 Prison to assess the conditions of detention or the wellbeing of the inmates.
