On August 19, 2025, the Supreme State Security Prosecution- SSSP decided to extend the detention of Mokhtar Tayel (68 years old), a retired former inspector at the Ministry of Health and the uncle of Netherlands-based vlogger Anas Habib, along with his son Omar Mokhtar. The decision is related to Case No. 4880 of 2025, Supreme State Security, where they face charges of joining and funding a terrorist group.
Security forces had arrested Mokhtar from his home in Beheira on July 22, 2025, just one day after the vlogger Habib published a video of himself closing the gates of the Egyptian embassy in the Netherlands. Habib stated the act was in protest of what he described as Egypt’s participation in the siege of Gaza. Mokhtar was taken to a security facility where he was illegally held for five days before being brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on July 27, which ordered his pretrial detention in this case. Omar Mokhtar was investigated on August 6.
