The Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR) welcomes the adoption of the resolution on the human rights situation in Egypt at the NGO Forum preceding the 85th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) on 19 October 2025.

The resolution reflects many of the concerns and recommendations included in the country review submitted by EFHR and other independent organizations. We are encouraged to see the resolution highlight several key issues documented in EFHR’s submission, including the systematic use of torture, the widespread practice of enforced disappearance, the misuse of counter-terrorism legislation, the practice of “case rotation,” and the deteriorating conditions inside detention facilities such as Badr and other new prisons. The resolution also echoes EFHR’s findings regarding the denial of family and lawyer visits, the lack of judicial oversight, and the alarming rise in deaths and suicide attempts linked to inhumane prison conditions.

EFHR welcomes the resolution’s call for urgent measures to improve detention conditions, end arbitrary detention, ensure accountability for abuses, and establish a transparent follow-up mechanism to monitor Egypt’s implementation of ACHPR recommendations during its 2025 review.

We also note and welcome the resolution’s emphasis on women’s rights, including the call for Egypt to ratify the Maputo Protocol and strengthen legal protections against gender-based violence, steps that remain essential for any meaningful human rights reform in the country.
