EFHR monitored a decision issued today, 16 July 2026, by the Supreme State Security Prosecution to detain Dr. Mohamed Zahran for 15 days pending investigation in Case No. 5773 of 2026 (Supreme State Security), after he was charged with spreading false news and statements, and using an online account to promote a terrorist crime.
These charges stem from a post in which he called for a meeting of teachers to discuss ways to implement court rulings mandating elections for the Teachers’ Syndicate and ending the judicial sequestration imposed on it for more than ten years, as well as another post in which he expressed his surprise at the widespread public interest in football matches compared to the disregard shown toward the injustices faced by some individuals, referring in it to the judicial prosecution he has personally faced and its economic and social impact on him.
Dr. Mohamed Zahran had been arrested at his home on the evening of Tuesday, 14 July 2026, and taken to Al-Amiriya police station, then to the National Security headquarters in Nasr City, where he remained unlawfully detained until he was brought before the State Security Prosecution.
