For expressing solidarity with a lawyer assaulted in Saudi Arabia: Arrest of former Bar Association candidate Osama El-Sheshtawy and his prosecution in Case 844/2025 on charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news

The Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR) documented today, Wednesday, 12 November 2025, the decision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution to detain lawyer and former candidate for the position of Bar Association President Osama Fathy El-Sheshtawy for fifteen days pending investigation in Case No. 844/2025. The prosecution charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and using an online platform to promote a terrorist organization.

According to EFHR’s monitoring, El-Sheshtawy was arrested on 10 November 2025 near his home by a security force and taken to a facility belonging to the National Security Agency, where he was insulted and beaten during interrogation.

El-Sheshtawy’s arrest came in connection with a Facebook post in which he expressed solidarity with the Egyptian lawyer who was assaulted inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca. In the post, he called on his fellow lawyers to gather in front of the Saudi embassy in Cairo to pressure the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene in the case.
