On September 11, 2023, the Egyptian Front for Human Rights monitored the decision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution- SSSP to renew the detention of Amr Ali Atiya (a police officer) for 15 days in case No. 2023/ 2023 due to his online support for the potential presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawi. Amr was arrested on August 30, 2023, at his residence for commenting on a post on the presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawi’s page where he said, “I support you and want to work with you when you become president.” He attached a picture of himself wearing a police uniform. Amr was interrogated by SSSP on August 31, 2023, and was charged with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media platforms.
The Egyptian Front for Human Rights also monitored the interrogation of two lawyers/ members of the potential presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawi’s campaign. They were arrested from the streat in September 2023. Then, They were interrogated before the SSSP after several days, in case No. 2124/2023, and were charged with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media platforms. The prosecution decided to detain them for fifteen days with the possibility of renewal.
