After being forcibly disappeared, tortured, and having over half a million Egyptian pounds seized from his home and shop: The SSSP detains a gold shop owner in case No. 598/2024 on accusations of joining and financing a terrorist group

The Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR) monitored on February 15, 2024, the decision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) to detain citizen Mohamed Rabie Abdel Hadi Mohamed (45 years old – owner of a gold shop) for 15 days pending investigation in case No. 598/2024 State Security High Court, after he was accused of joining and financing a terrorist group. This comes days after he was forcibly disappeared, tortured, and had over half a million Egyptian pounds seized from him during his arrest.

Mohamed Rabie was arrested from his home on January 3, 2024, where a police force raided his home in the Al-Baragil area of Giza, and took a sum of 350,000 Egyptian pounds that he owned there. They then searched his gold shop and took another sum of 229,000 Egyptian pounds. He was then taken to the National Security headquarters in Giza, where he was detained for 10 days and subjected to severe torture, including electric shock and beatings. He was then transferred to the National Security headquarters in Sheikh Zayed and remained there until he was presented to the Supreme State Security Prosecution. It is worth noting that the money were not presented to the prosecution for examination.
