SSSP Detains Citizen for Posting TikTok Video Complaining About Price Increases

EFHR documented on February 19, 2024, the decision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution- SSSP to detain citizen Mahmoud Ismail Mohamed Abdelhamid (32 years old ) for fifteen days pending investigation in Case No. 717 of 2024, after he was accused of joining a terrorist group, financing it, and spreading false news. This came after he posted videos criticizing the state’s policies, the high cost of living, and calling for the departure of the current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, on his TikTok account. Mahmoud Ismail was arrested from his residence in Cairo on February 11, 2024, where police raided his home and then took him to a facility belonging to the National Security Agency, where he was subjected to beating and electric shocks, and remained detained for 8 days until being presented to the SSSP. It is worth noting that several videos he posted were presented during the investigations.
